I have a real weakness for Oreos, but there’s something about making your own version at home that just makes them even better.
These chocolate cream sandwiches, or my “faux Oreos,” are everything you want: soft, chocolatey cookies with a sweet, creamy filling. They’re easy to make, super satisfying, and taste even better than the originals. Here’s how you can make a batch!
Chocolate cream sandwich recipe
For the cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup canola oil
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (35%)
- 1/4 tsp salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven
Get your oven going at 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. - Mix the dry ingredients
In a big bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until it’s all combined. - Combine the wet ingredients
In another bowl, mix up the canola oil, milk, and heavy cream until smooth. - Make the dough
Slowly add the wet mix into the dry ingredients, stirring until you get a smooth, slightly sticky dough. - Shape the cookies
Grab about a tablespoon of dough, roll it into a ball, and gently flatten it. Place each cookie about 2 inches apart on the baking sheet. - Bake: Pop them in the oven for 10-12 minutes until the edges are firm. Let them cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
For the cream filling
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (35%)
- 1/2 cup icing sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Whip the cream: In a bowl, beat the heavy cream until it thickens up. Add the icing sugar (and vanilla if you like) gradually, and whip until you get stiff peaks.
Assemble the sandwiches
Once the cookies are 100% cool, it’s go-time. Spread a good amount of cream on the flat side of one cookie and top with another to make a sandwich. Keep going until you’ve used up all the cookies and filling.
For an extra treat, throw them in the fridge for about 30 minutes. The filling will firm up nicely, and they’re even better chilled.
